The Lake Balaton is the largest fresh water lake in Central Europe and due to Hungary being landlocked there for it has been called as the “Hungarian Sea”. It is beautifully surrounded by historical towns, rolling hills and vineyards. On the way to Balaton we stop in Herend to visit the world famous porcelain manufactory which is celebrating the 185th anniversary of its foundation this year. In the Porcelain Museum, the largest collection of porcelain treasures on the globe! With the help of pot-throwers and professional painters you will be able to see the secret of porcelain manufacturing. After the visit of the manufactury we have a coffee in the ‘Porcelanium’. We will drive to two historical towns in the nothern shore of Balaton, first we explore Tihany peninsula, then visit the Benedictine Abbey on the top of the hill. The promenade next to abbey offers a great panoramic view over the lake. Balatonfüred is short drive from there a town which was a popular resort for many famous Hungarian writers and artists whose magnificent villas has been turned into museums. This town was declared as the first Hungarian medical centre and today it has a large State cardiology Sanatorium. There is a possibility to cross the lake by a ferry boat and drive back to Budapest on the southern shore.
